“What on earth?” Mom rubbed her eyes as she opened the bedroom window. She’d gotten home from her latest flight sometime in the night. “Snow? Where did snow come from? It was supposed to be sunny today!” She noticed the girls. “What are you doing out there? It’s freezing. Come inside, and I’ll make some breakfast.”

In the kitchen, puddles formed under Raven and Izzy as they thawed out with hot cocoa and chocolate chip pancakes. Raven breathed in the delicious chocolate smells. She was hungry after missing dinner the night before.

“I don’t understand this weather!” said Mom. “I wonder what the weather report says.”

Mom turned on the television. “A freak snowstorm hit the town of Lincoln today,” the man on the screen said. “Meanwhile, the rest of the Bay Area is enjoying the hottest day of the year so far. We don’t see any more snowstorms on the radar, so let’s hope a thaw comes soon. In the meantime, enjoy the snow, and stay safe.”

Raven looked at Mom. “Does this mean school is canceled?” She crossed her fingers for luck under the table.

“I wouldn’t be surprised. No one will be able to get there in this.” Mom’s phone beeped with a message. She showed it to Raven: SNOW DAY DECLARED FOR LINCOLN ELEMENTARY.

“A snow day! I’ve never heard of that happening here in my whole life,” said Mom.

Raven grinned. It had worked after all!
